we went to utrecht in the netherlands this weekend, thought we'd take a walk somewhere different than amsterdam. turned out that the streets, canals and the atmosphere of utrecht are just as cute. luckily we had friends showing us around so that we wouldn't get lost. because of the cold weather we stopped here and there for a snack, coffee or cake. it might be hard to believe but i actually had my very first scone ever and i bought some with apples and cinnamon and chocolate ones of course. we then had a big breakfast the next morning, hiding under blankets reading and drinking hot chocolate - the perfect ending to a wonderful weekend.

when i woke up this morning something was different. the light through my shutters was lighter than usual and i knew instantly it has snowed over night! it's the first time this winter that the snow managed to stay on the ground. so far it always melted immediately because the temperature was quite mild. so i got excited and went for a run around the lake. it kept snowing, my face was freezing, my cold feet were soaked from the puddles and it was hard to keep track but it felt so good! of course i couldn't resist taking pictures from the first and maybe last snow of this winter.

finally i managed to get the right box for my knitting supplies. luckily i found a wooden box in a hardware store by accident which at first was much lighter than in the pictures above. to make it darker i varnished it and now it even matches some of my other furniture. the first picture shows part of a scarf i've made over the christmas holidays. my friend and me knitted a lot while watching glee and it's much more fun than knitting by yourself :)

2011 felt like a very short year.. filled with great people, new experiences and of course a lot of joy. my personal highlight though was our trip to switzerland in the summer. we've been hiking a lot up on the mountains and - despite of my scepticism at first - it was the best outdoor activity i've ever experienced. we went hiking up to 7 hours a day but the effort and sometimes also struggle was all worth it. the paths and views we got to walk and see were breathtaking and the feeling at the end of the day incomparable. so if you ever struggle to decide for a destination for your summer holiday i strongly recommend going hiking. that might sound a bit boring at first but honestly, you won't regret it! i can't wait for the next time and until then i guess i'll have to keep reminiscing..

this was a christmas present for my other half M. (the quality of the pictures is not the best i have to admit). i saw this fabric in a fabric store months ago and even though it was a bit pricy i fell in love with it instantly. i've added corduroy arm patches and some navy fabric to the back side of the collar and cuffs. the 'labeling' was just for fun though! what i enjoyed most about making the shirt was attaching the buttons, not that they are any more special from the outlook than the ones you can buy in store but there is a little story to them. almost two years ago i bought a wooden sewing box at a fleamarket. there were all sorts of stuff in it, from needles to threat and buttons to old scissors. these items must be pretty old and i like to think that the box belonged to a lovely grandma sewing stuff for her grandchildren :) anyway, i found enough buttons in it to finish the shirt. there's even some leftover fabric which i might be able to use for making a skirt or something, yay!

and it is true that giving presents can be so much more satisfying than getting presents. the surprise on his face was just too cute :)

my friend took me to a flea market called 'gare du neuss' which was very different to the ones i usually go to. the location was great and the things people sold were so pretty to look at. most of that stuff was very old but also pricy of course. i didn't buy anything but it was still worth it. the flea market is on every weekend so if you're around or nearby, don't miss it!

today is my last day at work for this year and i can't wait to go home tomorrow for a whole week! i've made each of my lovely co-workers a little present which is basically just a sort of porcelain tray for used teabags! we drink a lot of tea in a day and usually put the teabags somewhere on the table because we're too lazy to walk to the kitchen to throw them into the bin - and they are dripping! so i hope these trays might be a little bit of a help :)

i spent another wonderful weekend in amsterdam and among other things, we went to a party where calvin harris was DJ'ing. i haven't been out dancing for so long that it was even more fun but the best part of that night was the food, haha. crazy how many different dishes they served, from burgers to fries and pasta to grilled meat. i think this should be made mandatory for parties ;)

i wanted to share this amazing old building i took pictures from the other day. it's actually quite near from where i live and i've passed it a couple of times before but never had a camera with me. furthermore i wasn't too sure if the owners might be annoyed by a complete stranger taking pictures of their home but then i figured, probably i wasn't the first and won't be the last one.
neither have i ever seen a metal fence so rusty or so many roots tangled up this much nor have i ever found plants growing around a building as beautiful as on this particular house. i wish i could have a look at the interior as well!

this is basically the scarf which was ruined by me not checking the laundry before putting it into the washing machine... and because i liked it so much i knitted it again. but this time the wool is slightly darker and i made it in a huge square instead of a normal scarf shape which i prefer cause now it's bigger and cosier :)

after this weekend i would consider myself a knitting-maniac, i actually managed to get muscle ache in my right hand! i've made a green beanie and am about to finish a scarf which i'll show the next time. in addition to that i've sewn a basic navy skirt. the winter might be on it's way but i will wear short skirts and shorts after all :)

another thing on my DIY list was a case for my ipod. i get so annoyed when i have to unknot the cable every single time i take the ipod out of my bag. i've lost the one i've made out of brown leather many years ago. this one is made of felt which is lighter and cheaper than leather and i was able to get it in green! my new favourite colour as you might have noticed :)

finally i've found the time to knit again and for the first time i made a beanie! i spent like half an hour in the wool store yesterday but couldn't decide on colour and texture. of course i ended up buying black (the 'colour' of 80% of my wardrobe as you can probably tell). the friendly saleswoman gave me a knitting description as well but still, it took me forever to figure out each step. i don't think i've done it properly but in the end it fits my head and keeps it warm which is enough for me ;)

this is proof that the frost has finally arrived. in the mornings it feels like my nose is about to fall off my face any minute and i can't feel my lips while talking, even smiling hurts.. but the scenery is just so beautiful! another positive thing about it is that i enjoy going for a run more than ever, even though i can hardly feel my toes or fingertips in the cold and i'm sure my face looks like a tomato.

not just another scarf.

last winter i started knitting scarfs and really got into it. i find it pretty relaxing and it's hard to stop once i pick up my knitting needles. the one in the pictures above was 'born' in switzerland this summer which i'm very attached to. simple story: during the entire car ride down to switzerland i knitted this scarf and nearly finished it by the time we arrived at our vacation spot. so far, so good. the second i finished it i knew it was all for nothing simply because i knitted it too wide which means it turned out too short! of course i didn't had enough wool with me either. and because being patient isn't part of my nature i eventually took it apart and started knitting the same wool all over again.. it took me a while to get over it but the result made me happy, so in the end every single knitted loop was worth the effort :)

now a less happy story about the very first scarf i made which is the one below (also see here). it got mixed up with my laundry and came out of the washing machine as a tiny felted piece of something undefinable. totally destroyed because it was made of alpaca wool/cashmere. so no fluffy scarf for me anymore.. maybe this is a good reason to knit yet another one - with the right calculation in length and width of course!

there's nothing better than staying in on sundays.. which usually means sleeping as long as possible, eating late breakfast and watching silly movies. today we had to get up in time though to head to the airport. we took a little detour to pass some nice spots in town and enjoy the sun for a bit. and it was the perfect weather to put on the cape i've neglected for too long. the one above i've sewn one or two years ago but haven't worn it a lot since then. usually it's too cold to wear it but i've discovered legwarmers (used as 'sleevewarmers') to cover my arms. maybe it's time to learn how to knit circular to make some myself! but one step at a time.. first comes a cup of hot chocolate and an episode of sex and the city :)

are brownies without sugar still considered as brownies? my other half is here over the weekend and we totally got excited about baking something together. so we looked up a recipe, bought all ingredients and went through the recipe one step after the other. all went so well until we took the first bite. that was when we realized that we totally forgot to add the sugar to the dough.. oh well, they taste like the 'healthy' version of brownies but still very delicious after all ;)

even though i love spring autumn is my favourite season of the year. i've never really been a summer person because i just can't deal with the heat, it always me tired for some reason. that is also why i don't like to spend my holidays at the beach lying in the sun. but anyway, i took some pictures of colourful trees on my way to the laundrette this morning. the colours of the leaves are so beautiful, especially when the sun is out.
the last three photos are from 2008 i think... three years in the blink of an eye...

little muffins i made the other day for a friends' dinner party - chocolate muffins with lemon cream topping and white chocolate ones with macadamia nuts. it was a very special event for me simply because i've never baked from scratch before - ever! usually i watch my friend baking or help stirring the dough, that's all. during my summer vacation in switzerland i bought some silicone muffin forms, more or less because they looked so colourful and cute. so here's proof i've finally used them - four months later. maybe there are more cakes to come..

this was my costume for halloween this year - a maki sushi with ginger and wasabi on my head. i wasn't able to go to a halloween party last weekend but therefore we had a little dress up thing going on in the office. that was on friday and it was much fun! i couldn't stop giggling the entire day because the costume wasn't very convenient to work in. i couldn't reach the phone nor turning around properly to the people i was talking to. in addition to that i kept loosing my fish eggs but wasn't able to pick them up. people thought that was hilarious - they'd rather watch than help me. it was fine sitting at my desk but as soon as i had to leave it for meetings, i was seperated from my 'halloween-group' which made me look like a very confused person running around as a sushi.. anyway, i loved dressing up and am already excited about next years' halloween :)

finally some pictures to show how pretty amsterdam is. i spend every other weekend there but the loveliest time to pay a visit is autumn i think. those colourful trees mirrored in the water of the canals.. almost cheesy but i love it! you can find all these cute little stores which sell random things and also clothing brands i don't get to buy in nuremberg. no need to mention that i spend too much on a jumper but it was just so soft and pretty. pictures of it will follow in an upcoming post..

the annual winter holidays are near and the christmas spirit seems to spread all around. another week of work before i get to go home for a couple of days.
